Do Trong Quy

– is a Vietnamese painter with a BFA from Vietnam University of Fine Art and is a Master of Fine Arts candidate at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Embracing American minimalist philosophy, Do Trong Quy began by erasing narrative images and creating content-free objects. Unsatisfied with this approach, he decided to explore the concept of erasing his identity, adopting the styles of celebrated American artists to create paintings and sculptures that reflect American culture and principles.

Instead of cannibalizing his own cultural heritage and political narratives to satisfy the demands of the western art market, Do Trong Quy’s work challenges the truisms of the contemporary art world by unapologetically capitalizing on America’s artistic legacies. His art reveals his sense of humor while he engages with and learns from American artists’ perspectives on life and their expressions in material forms.
